When I was helping coordinate my cousin's wedding in 2025, we sent out a beautiful digital RSVP form. Well-designed, easy to fill out. Eighty percent of the UK and US guests responded within three days.

The India guests? We had two responses from fifty.

So we redesigned the entire form. Added Hindi wording. Changed the question labels from "Attending / Not Attending" to "हाँ, आ रहे हैं / नहीं आ सकते." Reworded the invitation text to feel like it was written by a family member, not a corporate event manager.

Response rate jumped to 65%. The remaining 35% we called — but at least we knew who to call.

Good RSVP wording isn't just nice copy. For Indian weddings, it's the difference between a response and a phone tree.

Here's what actually works, function by function, in both languages.

Before the templates: what Indian RSVP wording needs to do differently

Western RSVP wording is transactional. "Kindly respond by [date]." It works because confirming attendance at a wedding is a familiar social action for that audience.

For many Indian guests — especially older relatives, outstation family, and anyone who grew up when weddings were open invitations to the whole neighbourhood — RSVP is not a natural ask. Requesting confirmation can feel like conditional hospitality. The wording has to work around this.

What that means practically:

  • Warm, not formal. "We can't wait to celebrate with you" lands better than "Please confirm your attendance."
  • Hindi for India guests, especially the RSVP question itself. The form intro can be bilingual. The RSVP button labels absolutely should be.
  • Clear what happens if they don't respond. Many guests think no-response means "we'll figure it out." Gently close that loop.
  • Per-function wording. Your Sangeet invite reads differently than your Haldi invite. The events have different vibes.
If you're building your RSVP form on The Curated Knot, you can set Hindi, Tamil, or English labels per field — including the attendance question, dietary options, and button text. Guests see the form in their preferred language automatically.

Mehendi RSVP wording

Mehendi is usually female-focused, often more intimate than the main wedding events. The wording should feel relaxed and festive.

English — formal:

"Join us for the Mehndi Ceremony and celebrate with henna, music, and loved ones. Kindly let us know if you'll be joining us."

English — casual:

"Mehndi, music, and your company — that's all we need. Are you in? Let us know so we can save you a spot."

Hindi — formal (Devanagari):

"मेहंदी की शुभ बेला में आपकी उपस्थिति हमारे लिए अत्यंत हर्ष का कारण होगी। कृपया अपनी उपस्थिति की पुष्टि करें।"

Hindi — casual:

"मेहंदी में आ रहे हो ना? हमें ज़रूर बताओ!"

RSVP form field labels (Hindi):

  • Attendance question: "क्या आप मेहंदी में आएंगे/आएंगी?"
  • Yes option: "हाँ, ज़रूर आऊँगा/आऊँगी"
  • No option: "नहीं, नहीं आ सकता/सकती"

Haldi RSVP wording

Haldi is close family. The guest list is small and the tone is intimate — almost private. The RSVP for Haldi matters a lot because venue space and catering is usually tighter.

English:

"The Haldi is our most intimate celebration — just family, turmeric, and blessings. We'd love to have you there. Please let us know if you'll be joining."

English (reminder version):

"Quick note — we're finalising numbers for the Haldi. It's a small gathering, and we want to make sure there's a place for you. Can you let us know?"

Hindi:

"हल्दी हमारा पारिवारिक और अंतरंग समारोह है। आपकी उपस्थिति इसे और भी विशेष बना देगी। कृपया बताएं कि आप आ सकते हैं।"

Hindi — casual:

"हल्दी में आ रहे हो? हमें जल्दी बताओ — बहुत ज़्यादा लोग नहीं हैं इसमें।"

For Haldi specifically, make sure your RSVP form has a capacity limit enabled. It's the one event where "the more the merrier" isn't true — most couples have a hard stop at 40–60 people for practical reasons.

Sangeet RSVP wording

Sangeet is the most flexible event in tone — it's an evening of performances and dancing, guests mix freely, and the energy is festive. The wording can be more playful than the formal ceremony invite.

English — playful:

"Get your dancing shoes ready. The Sangeet is our evening for music, performances, and celebration. Let us know you're coming so we can save the dance floor space."

English — standard:

"We're looking forward to celebrating the evening before our wedding with family and friends. Kindly confirm your attendance for the Sangeet."

Hindi — formal:

"संगीत की इस शुभ संध्या में आपकी उपस्थिति हमारे लिए अत्यंत आनंददायक होगी। कृपया पुष्टि करें।"

Hindi — casual:

"संगीत में नाचने के लिए तैयार हो? हमें बताओ तुम आ रहे हो!"

Form field example (bilingual):

"Will you be joining us for the Sangeet? / क्या आप संगीत में शामिल होंगे?"

Baraat RSVP wording

Baraat RSVPs are different from other functions — they're about logistics as much as attendance. Guests need to know where to meet, not just whether to come.

English:

"The Baraat procession begins at [location] at [time]. If you're joining the procession, please let us know so we can coordinate the group. If you're meeting us at the venue, no RSVP needed for this event."

Hindi:

"बरात [स्थान] से [समय] पर निकलेगी। अगर आप बरात में चलना चाहते हैं तो कृपया हमें बताएं।"

The Baraat RSVP is the one couples most often skip — and regret on the day. If 40 people say they'll walk in the procession and 70 show up, it creates chaos at the meeting point. Get a confirmed number.

Pheras / Nikah / Anand Karaj RSVP wording

The main ceremony. This is where formality is appropriate — the invite should match the occasion.

English — Hindu ceremony:

"We invite you to witness and bless our wedding ceremony. Please confirm your attendance so we can ensure you have a seat for the Pheras."

English — Muslim ceremony:

"We would be honoured by your presence at our Nikah. Kindly confirm your attendance."

English — Sikh ceremony:

"Please join us at the Gurdwara for our Anand Karaj. We'd love to have your blessings as we begin this journey."

Hindi:

"विवाह के पावन अवसर पर आपकी उपस्थिति और आशीर्वाद हमारे लिए अमूल्य है। कृपया अपनी उपस्थिति की पुष्टि करें।"

Form field labels (Hindi/English):

Will you be attending the ceremony?"
Yes, I'll be there to bless the couple"
I'm unable to attend"

Reception RSVP wording

Reception is typically the largest event and often has the most diverse guest list — work colleagues, family friends, and people who may be attending only this function.

English — formal:

"Please join us to celebrate our wedding at the Reception dinner. Kindly confirm your attendance and let us know your meal preference."

English — with dietary question:

"We'd love to celebrate with you at the Reception. Please confirm your attendance and share whether you have any dietary preferences so we can make sure there's something perfect for you."

Hindi:

"रिसेप्शन में आपकी उपस्थिति हमारे लिए बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। कृपया पुष्टि करें और खान-पान की प्राथमिकता बताएं।"

Dietary field labels in Hindi:

  • "खान-पान की प्राथमिकता" (Dietary preference)
(Vegetarian)
(Non-vegetarian)
(Jain)
(Halal)
(Vegan)
(No restrictions)

The RSVP confirmation message

What guests see after they submit matters as much as the form itself. Many India-based guests will submit and then call your parents to check if it went through — because they have no way to verify. A clear confirmation message cuts those calls significantly.

English confirmation:

"Thank you — your RSVP is confirmed! We can't wait to celebrate with you. If you have any questions, contact us at [phone number]."

Hindi confirmation:

"आपकी पुष्टि मिल गई! हम आपसे मिलने के लिए बेहद उत्साहित हैं। किसी भी प्रश्न के लिए [फोन नंबर] पर संपर्क करें।"

Follow-up message templates

For the guests who didn't respond by the deadline, these WhatsApp messages work better than a reminder notification.

Casual follow-up (for friends and younger relatives):

"Hey! We noticed we haven't received your RSVP yet for the [function]. No pressure, but we're finalising numbers with the venue. Can you let us know if you'll be there? Here's the link: [link]"

Respectful follow-up (for older relatives):

"Namaste. We wanted to make sure you received the invitation for [function]. We'd be so happy to have you with us. Please let us know if you'll be joining — you can reply here or on the link: [link]"

Hindi follow-up:

"नमस्ते! हमें अभी तक [समारोह] के लिए आपकी पुष्टि नहीं मिली। आप आ रहे हैं? कृपया बताएं — [link]"

The Curated Knot's RSVP feature lets you set a deadline per function, and sends automatic WhatsApp reminders to guests who haven't responded. You set the wording once — the system handles the follow-ups.

A note on transliteration

If some of your India guests don't read Devanagari well on a phone screen, you can use romanised Hindi alongside the script:

  • "Kya aap mehendi mein aa rahe hain?" (Are you coming to the Mehendi?)
  • "Haan, zaroor aaunga/aaungi" (Yes, I'll be there)
  • "Nahi, nahi aa sakta/sakti" (No, unable to attend)

This is particularly useful for guests in cities with mixed-script comfort — Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad — where many people think in Hindi or a regional language but type more comfortably in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same RSVP wording for all Indian wedding functions?

No — and this is one of the most common mistakes. Each function has a different guest list, a different tone, and different logistical needs. Mehendi wording should feel relaxed and intimate. Baraat wording needs to include logistics (meeting point, time, procession route). Ceremony wording should be formal and clear. A generic invite ("Please join us for our wedding celebrations") doesn't tell guests which event they're RSVPing for.

What RSVP wording works best for elderly Indian relatives?

Keep it short, warm, and in Hindi or the relevant regional language. Avoid digital platform language like "kindly RSVP via the link below" — phrase it as a personal message from a family member. The most effective approach: a WhatsApp message from someone they know well, with the link embedded naturally in the note rather than pasted at the end. If your RSVP form has Hindi field labels, that also reduces friction for guests navigating on a phone.

How do I write an RSVP message in Hindi for a wedding?

Start with a warm greeting appropriate to your relationship — "Namaste" for formal, "Haan bolo" (a casual opener) for close friends. Follow with the event name, date, and location in simple language. Close with the RSVP ask: "Kripya bataein ki aap aa rahe hain" (Please let us know if you'll be attending). Use the templates in this post as a base and personalise to match your family's tone.

What should the RSVP confirmation message say after a guest submits?

Acknowledge the submission immediately, state which function they confirmed for, and give a contact number or email in case they need to change their response. Many India-based guests will call your parents to check if the form "went through" — a clear confirmation message reduces those calls. In Hindi: "Aapki pushti mil gayi — hum aapse milne ke liye bahut utsahit hain!"

Should I include a deadline in the RSVP wording?

Yes, always — but phrase it as an invitation to respond early, not a warning. "We'd love to hear from you by [date] so we can make sure everything is perfect for your visit" works better than "Response required by [date]." For outstation guests, give at least 5–6 weeks from the function date. See our RSVP deadline guide for function-by-function timing.

How do I handle dietary questions in the RSVP wording?

Frame the dietary question as a way to ensure the guest is taken care of, not as a logistical checkbox. "To make sure we have something perfect for you, please share your dietary preferences" lands better than "Select dietary requirement." Offer specific options — Vegetarian, Non-vegetarian, Jain, Halal, Vegan — rather than a free-text field. The caterer needs structured data, not "I don't eat certain things."
